Monthly online discussions are continuing education opportunities for mental health interpreters.  QMHI's are required to have 40 contact hours continuing education per year.  Beginning Jaunary 2011, All sessions will be held on our own chat program.

The Objectives of the training:

  • To understand the dynamics of working across languages and cultures in treatment
  • To identify the cultural self awareness of hearing individuals/interpreters/mental health clinicians
  • To give the participants an opportunity to ask questions about the culture and learn from each other

Michelle Niehaus is the Statewide Coordinator for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services with the Division for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Addiction Services in Kentucky. She provided direct mental health services for over nine years at Deaf Network in Indiana and Seven Counties Services in Louisville, KY. Michelle is the current chair of the mental health Special Interest Section of ADARA, has published in JADARA, and has presented and done poster sessions at previous conferences. She is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington with a concentration in ASL. She designed an individualized concentration in Deaf Services for her Master’s of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Ms. Niehaus holds a certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults from Western Oregon University. She completed the Post-Employment Training on the Administration of Programs for People Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing at San Diego State University in 2005. Education and advocacy to grow and improve services are her passion.
